CHAMBER BANQUET AWARDS

The 70th Annual Chamber Awards Banquet, "Baker County, Where Dreams Come True", was held January 21st at the Baker Elk's LodgeThe evening was festive, with 39 local businesses participating in decorating tables with beautiful centerpieces and great gifts for all!  (click here for a list of table sponsors and auction donors -- everyone was terrific and very, very appreciated!)

Everyone enjoyed the music, provided by Frank Carlson, the food, provided by the Oregon Trail Restaurant, and the fun that Mistress of Ceremonies Ginger Savage brought to the evening.

Presentations about the Chamber, Baker County marketing and the economic outlook for Baker County were made by Philip Stone, Mike Rudi, Vicki Brocato and Amy Dunkak, and Ron Bell.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to those being recognized for their contributions to Baker County.

This year's Award Winner's were:

Business of the Year: Sorbenots

Legacy Woman of the Year:

Aletha Bonebrake and Cindy Johansen

Legacy Man of the Year:

Dave Curtis

Woman of the Year:

Jo Hinrichsen & Betty Spooner

Man of the Year:

Excellence in Agriculture:

Chandler Herefords, Inc.

Following the award ceremonies, the auction of donated items from Chamber members was led by Scott Warner, who helped raise $3,620 for the chamber to use for the events and programs that help make Baker County a great place to live.

After the auction, The Baker Youth Community Action Project and ESD Alternative Class's beautiful, handmade picnic table was given for the door prize, and the Banquet Wheel of Fortune was spun to give away the table centerpieces.

The Annual Chamber Honors Banquet is more than just an excuse for a party, as much fun as it isIt gives the community a chance to honor those of excellence, lean about what is happening with its Chamber of Commerce, and give its support to the Chamber!

Friday Forum

February Friday Forum -

The Baker County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present Mike Rudi, 2006 President of the Board of Directors for the Baker County Chamber of Commerce, as the speaker for this month's Friday Forum.

Mike, who has been President of the Board since January, will be discussing the Chamber of Commerce and what is happening with the organizationMike is also interested in hearing from Chamber members and the community in regards to what the Chamber does and what changes and improvements might be made.

Mike, whose business is Wheatland Insurance here in Baker City, believes that communication with the community is imperative if the Chamber of  Commerce is to serve the community the way it should.

The Friday Forum is the perfect venue for this kind of discussion.

Please join us in welcoming Mike Rudi on Friday, February 10th at 11:30 a.m. at the Sunridge for the once monthly Friday Forum.

Reservations are not necessary, lunch is simply ordered from the Sunridge's menu, (and is not mandatory) - just come and enjoy the discussion!

See you there!!

If you would like to notify the chamber about the luncheon here!

Recognizing Baker County Businesses

The business that has been chosen for recognition this month is not business at all, but our own Soroptimist International of Baker CountyThe Soroptimists, like to many of the service clubs in Baker County, go above and beyond intheir support of their communities and promoting "a United Baker County as a place to visit, live and do business..."

The Soroptimists can always be counted on as volunteers in events beyond their own, such as the district and state 1-A basketball tournamentsEven their most visible money raising project is a support of Baker County in that the pillows, throws and totes feature some of our Historic Buildings

Some of the awards that the Soroptimists have given recently were:

The Violet Richardson award of $500, given to Trisha Riley-Colton as a young woman between 14-17 years old who make the world a better place through their volunteer efforts.  The award also includes a $100 savings bond from First Bank.

The Woman's Opportunity Award of $740 is given to a female head of household who has enrolled or been accepted to a vocational / skills training program or undergraduate degree program and has financial need.  The recipient of this award was Melanie Brown, who is taking pre-med courses in hopes of becoming a pediatrician.

Pleas join us in thanking the Baker County Soroptimists for the efforts they make in helping Baker County become an even better place to live!
